Friday Feature & Follow {5}

Friday Feature & Follow is a weekly hop where book bloggers meet other book bloggers and follow their awesome blogs! It is hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

Q: Activity! Who is your to-die-for book crush? What do you think they look like? Add an image to make us all happy.

Right now my to-die-for book crush is easily Henry, AKA Hades, from The Goddess Test series by Aimee Carter. I LOVE dark male characters, especially if they are a God of the Underworld. He's so mysterious and sad, but something about him I just love. Maybe it's his attitude and his need to love someone. Yet, he's still very afraid to accept that he can in fact love someone without hurting them and pushing them away. Love him. *collective sigh*

So if I had to pick someone to be Henry, I would totally pick Ian Somerhalder. He's just got that look to him. I don't watch the Vampire Diaries, so no I didn't make this decision based off of that.

Paranormal Reading Challenge 2013

Welcome to the 2013 Paranormal Reading Challenge hosted by Megan Likes Books and Auntie Spinelli Reads! There are so many awesome sub-genres of paranormal books, that it's easy to find one you like and stick with it. So that's why I decided to make a reading challenge with the goal of reading about all kinds of paranormal creatures.

The goal is to read one book featuring each of the following paranormal creatures:

Vampires
Werewolves/Shifters
Fey
Angels/Nephilim
Mermaids
Dragons
Zombies
Demons
Witches/Wizards
Ghosts
Aliens
Other (ie: sirens, unicorns, centaurs, timetravel etc.)

Guidelines:
1. This challenge runs from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013.
2. You must have a blog to able to participate, since reviews must be added to the linky.
3. When you sign up with the linky, please put the link to your post about joining the Paranormal Reading Challenge.
4. You're welcome to list your books beforehand or just add as you go.
5. Sign-ups are open until December 1, 2013
6. At the beginning of each month, I will post a kick-start post, each month featuring a different category of paranormal creature. This post will also include a linky to include your reviews from that month.
7. Each review you link will qualify you for an entry into the monthy giveaway and if your review includes the feature paranormal creature of that month, you get a bonus entry.
8. Each book can only count for one category, even if it contains more than one paranormal creature. For example, Twilight contains both vampires and werewolves, but you can't use it for both the vampires and werewolves/shifters categories.
9. Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered into a grand prize giveaway at the end of the year.
10. If you read multiple books from one category, feel free to add them to the linkies. Don't stop at just one!
11. Book can count for other challenges.

Each month, we'll be featuring one of the creatures on the list at both Megan Likes Books and Auntie Spinelli Reads.

Waiting on Wednesday {4}: Forever by Jacquelyn Frank

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where we all share what books we're eagerly waiting for!

"After being brought back from death, police officer Jackson Waverly receives the shock of his life: he has become host to a Bodywalker, a spirit that is reborn in flesh and blood, and part of a proud, ancient race that uses its extraordinary gifts to battle dark, evil forces. Jackson’s spirit is a powerful one—none other than the Egyptian pharaoh Menes, who longs to reunite with his eternal love, the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut.

While Menes is obsessed with finding the perfect vessel for his queen, Jackson cannot stop thinking about Dr. Marissa Anderson, the gorgeous precinct shrink who keeps pushing him to confront his grief over the loss of his K-9 partner. But what Marissa really arouses most in Jackson is intense desire, which is exactly what Menes is looking for. To fight a great enemy, pharaoh and queen must join; but to host Hatshepsut, Marissa will first have to die. Fate has given Jackson a profound choice: save Marissa from Menes’ plan or keep an entire species from the brink of extinction." -from Goodreads.com

Forever (The World of Nightwalkers, #2)

I loved Forbidden, which was the first in this series. These books are all about Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers, more specifically the Bodywalkers. I haven't read any of her other books besides Forbidden, and I didn't need to for that story. I loved it so much and I just can't wait for this book!

Top 10 Most Anticipated Books of 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each Tuesday features a different topic and you post your top ten list related to the topic, fun stuff!

Top 10 Most Anticipated Books of 2013:

Alright so 2013 is going to pretty much be an awesome year for books. I am beyond fantastically super duper hyper happy about The Eternity Cure and The Goddess Inheritance, those two series are both in my top 5 favorites. Affliction will be good, assuming that I get that far in the Anita Blake series by then. I'm on like book 4 right now of..well.. Affliction is book 22.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is also a book I'm super excited over, Neil Gaiman is one of my all time favorite authors. Forever is going to be amazeballs, Forbidden was one of my favorite paranormal romance novels ever. That book has some high expectations, so I hope it lives up to it.

Scarlet and Everbound, well those two I just really like the plot of the first books and the covers. I have yet to read Cinder and Everneath, but they are both on my list to read for 2013. MacRieve should be interesting, I haven't read all of the books in the series yet though so hopefully it's still good without the others. I like some of her books, but others I couldn't get through. A Hunger Like No Other for instance, had far too much pseudo rape in it for my taste.

Unravel Me, I just got an ARC of! Super excited for that, and am going to be reading Shatter Me this coming week. I also just got an ARC for the Dead and Buried, it looks like it will be an awesome one too!

Review: Rogue Rider by Larissa Ione

Book Synopsis:

"The prophecies were there but no one listened. Until now. They are the Lords of Deliverance and they have the power to ward off Doomsday . . . or let it ride.

Jillian Cardiff came to this remote mountain town to forget the demon attack that almost killed her. Instead, she rescues - and falls for - a gorgeous stranger who has no memory of anything other than his name. Handsome, charming and protective, Reseph seems like the kind of man that Jillian can trust. But with hints of a troubling history of his own, he's also the kind of man that can be very dangerous . . .

Reseph may not know his background, or why he mysteriously appeared in Jillian's life, but he knows he wants to stay. Yet when Jillian's neighbors are killed and demon hunters arrive on the scene, Reseph fears that he's putting Jillian in danger. And once it's revealed that Reseph is also Pestilence, the Horseman responsible for ravaging the world with death and destruction, he and Jillian must face the greatest challenge of all: can they forget the horrors of a chilling past to save the future they both desire?" -from Goodreads.com

What I Thought:

Rogue Rider is the last book in Larissa Ione's Lords of Deliverance Series, and pretty much sums up all of the previous books through out the story. I started this book with no knowledge of the other books, but was reassured that these books are great stand alone stories. I had absolutely no problem catching up on everything that had happened and exactly who was who in this story.

Basically here's the short synopsis, in my opinion;

Jillian lives in the middle of friggin' nowhere Colorado. She finds a naked dude laying out in a snowbank, half frozen, and brings him back to her home to unthaw the poor guy. He turns out to be freaking AMAZINGLY attractive, what with his nice blonde hair and muscles. He has no idea who he is, other than that his name is Reseph. Well, Reseph is Pestilence, one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse that happened to have killed thousands of people in about a year. Reseph was the first of the Horsement to have his seal broken, which caused his evil side  (Pesilience) to take over and trigger the apocalypse. So basically the whole story is about him trying to figure out who he is and falling for Jillian. Obviously there's a lot more to it than that, a lot a lot, but I can't divulge too much without spoiling it.

Resph doesn't wear a shirt for a lot of this book, and I have to say I'm not going to complain. I totally loved that. Haha. Jillian is a pretty awesome character, and usually the heroines in paranormal romance are super tough or super whiny. Jillian can hunt, take care of her animals, her home, cut wood, and do all that awesome stuff on her own. She's self sustaining which is really refreshing. Reseph is a really funny guy, caring, and rather protective. These two combined are like the perfect person, so no wonder why they belong together!

The writing of this book was amazingly well done, and it kept me on my toes. There was twist after twist and new information was revealed about the other characters of the series through out this book. Lots of tasty smexy scenes that were really well written as well. I'm looking forward to going back and reading the other three books, which are on the way to me right now, and catching up on the full story.

There's some pretty awesome information you find out about Reaver and Harvester too. But, you have to read to the end of the book to find out! It's awesome!

I recommend this book to anyone who loves Larissa's writing, anyone who loves a well written paranormal romance, and anyone who likes the whole good/evil struggle.

I just want to go EEEEEEEEEEEEE every time I see the cover of this book. That's how much I loved it!

Dystopia Reading Challenge 2013

This challenge is being hosted by Ula at Blog of Erised! Here are the rules of the sign up from Ula's blog:

Love Dystopian books? Then this is just the right thing for you! If you're as big of a fan as I am of post-apocalyptic dystopia books (and even if your are not) you are welcome to join the challenge!

We will try to read 24 Dystopian books in 2013 as the challenge goal, which means 2 per month, if you would like to read them monthly. You can of course make your own schedule. 2 per month is plenty because it still gives you time to explore and love books from other genres.

At the end of the year there will also be a giveaway with great prizes!

Rules

> The challenge will run from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. Each month will have its own link form so you will be able to share your book reviews. You do not have to review the books you read to participate, but only those who read/reviewed at least one dystopian book will be able to participate in the giveaway (you can track your reading without the reviews with Goodreads, Shelfari etc.).
> Books that count in this challenge must include any form of post-apocalyptic theme (book sites like Goodreads are good sources of genre information). The books must be full-length.
> All formats allowed.
> Rereads allowed.
> It does not matter whether it's a series or a stand-alone book.
> If you are participating, grab the challenge button from below and post it on you blog. You can also make a post with the header (the code is also below). Please include the link back to this post so others will be able to participate as well.
> If you will participate, put the sign-up link to your blog post (about the challenge) or blog (for the button) directly into the linky below. Sign-ups will be open until December 20, 2013.
> You do not have to list your books in advance, go and do as you please. Read as many as you want (you can read more than 24!) and whenever you want, as long as you have fun!
> Info about the giveaway will be available in December 2013.

Levels

Level 1: Recruit (1 to 6 books)
Level 2: Rebel (7 to 12 books)
Level 3: Revolutionist (13 to 18 books)
Level 4: Leader (19+ books)

Each time you reach a new level, you will receive a badge.

I LOVE dystopian and have read a bunch this year. I really failed at keeping up with the challenges I signed up for in 2012 because of family issues going on and school...hopefully this year will be different!

No you don't have to list out your books in advance, but I am going to go ahead and do that anyways. Making a list helps me keep track of what I want to read for each challenge, but I can always go back and change it. This also makes it easier for me when signing up for other challenges so I can cross reference books. I also added a shelf for them on Goodreads!

So I am going to go for Level 4 because dystopian is one of my favorite genres.

1. Aftertime by Sophie Littlefield

4. Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Friday Feature & Follow (4)

Friday Feature & Follow is a weekly hop where book bloggers meet other book bloggers and follow their awesome blogs! It is hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

Q: Books are turned into movies all the time! Turn it around. What movie would make a great book?

Oh that is a really good question!

Uhmm let me think...hmmm.hmmmmmmm...

Pan's Labyrinth would make an awesome book, but it would have to be in Spanish for it to be legit. This question is a really hard one! Most of my favorite movies were books beforehand or are already made into books.

What would you pick?

Guest Blog: Ashley Nemer Author of Blood Purple + Giveaway

Where Dreams Come From…

Do you close your eyes at night and have visions pass before your eyes, your heart races, your body sweats. Your deepest and wildest adventures become reality. Of course, we all experience dreams and the many sensations that brings to us. But what inspires those dreams? Where do we come up with the material to keep dreaming about?

My dreams come from my escapes. What escapes do you have? Mine come from books, movies, friends and my imagination.

The earliest dreams I remember having were flying on the broomstick with the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. She was the start of my obsession with an amazing antagonist. I require no less than the best.  My world, the Algula world, has these amazing men and women who are horrible beings. They take what nightmares are made of and spew onto the pages. But they also leave you wanting more, wanting to know why, wanting to know how they came to be.

The Wicked Witch of the West gave me the ideas that even the bad guy needs to be loved. All she wanted were the slippers that her sister had. Is that so bad? Sure, she wanted to rule the munchkins and make them her slaves, but what antagonist doesn’t like that.  What I was lacking from that movie/books is the why, why is she the way she is, why is she green why is she so hateful. I NEED TO KNOW!

Because of my incisive need to know WHY I made sure that my villains in The Blood Series had their voices heard too. What’s better than knowing the inner workings of evil and what makes them tick.

Take Dominic for example. He is one cruel and demented vampire. But those of you who have read the book know that he’s the way he is because of his father Haydar. Haydar resented him for his wife dying in childbirth up to the point of saying he was the actual cause of death. Never mind the fact that the Algula have a low birthrate and survival rate. That it is just part of their make-up to have fertility issues. No Haydar took it to an extreme. My readers feel sorry for Dominic. The want him to get help, feel loved, have that approval he sought out for hundreds of years.

I think being able to identify with all of the characters is important, even if they are the ‘bad guys.’ I think that is how a reader can really become vested in the author and the series. Especially if the bad guys are a constant figure in the books.

Example: Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Stryker. One Silent Night is not only an excellent book but it is there to help us the reader dive deeper into Stryker’s Psyche. He’s leader of the Daimons and they are a revolving evil in her world. To me, it’s great knowing WHY they do what they do. Don’t you feel bad for them; don’t you want him to seek revenge on Apollo and what he had done to his own people? I know I do.

So this is my two cents on why I love making bad guys the way I do and why I LOVE a good book bad guy.

And…for a future FYI, Author Stacy Moran is working on her debut novel Blood Myth and there is a bad guy in there that will make you shiver, your core wet and your heart go pitter patter. Stay tuned for Tanerk Rau.

"In a world we think we know, live other races entirely hidden from the mortal perspective. Creatures of legend, of fable and myth, their very history and nature have allowed them to walk side by side with humans since time immemorial. They are warriors, they are hunters, and they are Algula Vampire. And in their own midst, a battle is brewing for supremacy, for dominance, that can and will affect all around them. Old hatred never dies and vengeance is a fiery sword that cuts a bloody swath."

Review: Forbidden by Jacquelyn Frank

Book Synopsis:

"The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn't turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.

When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers." -from Goodreads.com

Forbidden (The World of Nightwalkers, #1)

What I Thought:

Forbidden takes place in the world of the Bodywalkers. This book is a spin-off of Jacquelyn's Nightwalkers series where the Bodywalkers are mentioned, but from what I've been told not a whole lot is said about them. I have yet to read any of Jacquelyn's other books, so I wasn't too sure how I felt about jumping into this one.

I was pleasantly surprised though! It was very easy to understand, as you didn't need any of the information from the other series to get this one. The world building in Forbidden is amazing, there is so much detail that it brings it all together quite nicely. Jacquelyn's writing style flows well, and she uses some very eloquent words. I like that in a book, as it actually had me looking up a few words! Learning while reading is always a plus.

Now on to the actual story.

Docia is the regular American girl; single, working an office job, tries to keep up on fashion, likes cute stuff, etc. At first I wasn't too sure how I felt about her, she just seemed a tad too girly for me. through out the book though her personality came out more and more, and she actually is a pretty intelligent woman. Strong willed to boot.

On her way to work one morning she decides to cross over a bridge. She usually doesn't walk to work but her car is broken so she had to. While crossing the bridge some crazy guy decides to take the corner and the bridge at a super fast speed, causing Docia to jump up out of the way onto the railing. Well, that seems like a great idea and all, but then the crazy guy shoves her over the edge. Docia suffers traumatic injuries and she shouldn't have lived. Her soul lands in this place called the Ether, which is basically like limbo. there she meets this beautiful Egyptian woman that offers to share Docia's body in exchange for staying alive.

At first I didn't understand how the whole Bodywalker thing was going to work. I thought that the Bodywalker was going to posses the person and totally take over. That's now how this works thankfully! The Bodywalker soul comes back to Earth with the person they have chosen and shares the body with the person. The two souls eventually blend together, and they become one. It takes a few weeks to get to this point though, and the Bodywalker is the most vulnerable at this point.

The Bodywalker that inhabits Docia is the Queen of the Bodywalkers, Hatsheput  The Queen and King of the Bodywalkers rule over their people, except for the group of renegades called the Templars. The Templars have a high priestess and she wants to be the one in charge of the Bodywalkers. Templars were all the priests and priestesses of Ancient Egypt, the ones that performed the mummification process. This is the reason why the Bodywalkers exist, mummification caused the soul to become immortal and to stay in the Ether.

I really loved the Ancient Egyptian mythology in this book. I had some slight issues with the actual histories of a few of the pharaoh's, but that is only because I have studied these things extensively (I wanted to be an Egyptologist for like..10 years..) The little issues I had were not enough to deter me though, and I looked past them and actually LOVE this book.

This book has the perfect amount of romantic suspense going on between Docia and Ram, an awesome story line  awesome world building, perfect amount of tension between the Templars and other Bodywalkers, and it has a great sibling love thing to it as well. I don't want to give too much away, the synopsis I posted above this explains most of the story. There are quite a few surprises in this book, it will keep you on your toes!

Frank has really done paranormal romance in a new way, at least in my mind. There were no vampires in this book, no shifters, no demons. There were Bodywalkers, Garagoyles, and Djin. It was very refreshing to read a paranormal romance with a new take on the whole idea.

I highly suggest this book if you love paranormal romance and have been looking for something refreshingly new in the genre. I can't wait for the next one! I'm super excited for this series!

Now I'm going to go out an buy myself a copy, because I got this from Netgalley! Thanks Netgalley!
